Learn about Japanese calligraphy and Yojijukugo – phrases made up of four kanji characters. Choose a meaningful phrase and make your own Japanese hanging scroll to display at home.
Overview
Create your own Japanese hanging scroll in Hiroshima and take home a meaningful piece of Kanji art.
This private calligraphy workshop takes place in a calm Japanese-style art studio, about a 15-minute walk from Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. With no other guests present, you can enjoy the experience at your own pace.
First, you will learn about Japanese calligraphy, hanging scrolls and Yojijukugo – traditional phrases made with four Kanji characters.
Using an authentic Kumano brush made in Hiroshima, you will then learn how to hold the brush and practise basic calligraphy techniques.
Next, you will choose the words for your hanging scroll. Each Yojijukugo has its own meaning and message, so you can select one that reflects your personality, values, goals or memories from your trip.
If you prefer something simpler, you can choose a word written with one or two Kanji characters. The instructor will explain the meanings and help you find the right words for you.
After choosing and practising your Kanji, you will write your final piece and mount it onto a traditional Japanese hanging scroll called a Kakejiku. You can choose from two scroll colours to match your interior style.
Your finished hanging scroll is approximately 80 cm long and looks beautiful in both Japanese-style and modern homes. It will be placed in a protective tube so that you can take it home safely.
Perfect for couples, families, friends and solo travellers, this beginner-friendly workshop offers a meaningful way to experience Japanese culture and create a lasting memory of your time in Hiroshima.
